VIVRE LA VILLE!: A GREAT VISION FOR A GREAT DISTRICT

The main goals of the planning activities in Gerland are: improvement of the image and diversity of the area and creation of the connection, both in physical and psychological way, between Gerland and other parts of the city. Contemporary approach to the development of Gerland consists of several operational levels: it expresses in the actions for the improvement of the physical structure of the area, social structure of inhabitants and visitors, promotes economical stimulation for the development of the private potentials and education of young professionals to provide the future social capital for Technopôle progression and stronger connections with the established industry and technology.
The demand for multifunctional, diverse and heterogenic living area, created in respect for the preferences of the local communities, expresses in the composition of the land use forms and the number of on-going improvement projects, submitted by the local parties and evaluated/controlled by Mission Gerland. The redevelopment of the area is financed from several sources, both public and private.
Within the area of Gerland numerous functional spaces were identified and are developed according to the main principle guidelines: the Technopôle area with assisting educational, academic and residential hinterlands, recreational green spaces and accompanying sport facilities and cultural and social meeting points. Improvement of the transportation system is provided by new underground line and network of bicycle and pedestrian routes.

Good practice and innovation:

  1. Innovative process of public dialogue, providing public support and acceptance for the design process and rehabilitation activities, experimentally applied in Gerland n all levels of planning and implementation
  2. Gerland Scientific Park is considered unique, aiming to create a heterogeneous area possessing all basic urban functions, focused on specific clusters: top-ranked scientific and academic area, sport and entertainment area and a leisure zone
  3. Creation of the connection between two conflict factors: economic development and quality of life. The Technopôle is understood not only a centre of technology, but a place, where "Lyon is expanding from within" towards the innovative multifunctional "new town"
  4. Positive approach of "Une grande vision pour un grand quartier"
